Volunteer of the Month

August 2021 - David Gonzales

David is a dismissal rockstar — showing up every day to help us create an organized way to guide parents through the new car line and walk-up dismissal routines during the first two weeks of school. He even let us borrow his own personal arsenal of cones and other event management props! You can still see David at least once per week managing walk-up dismissal, and if that does't earn him a $10 Starbucks gift card, we don't know what does! Let's get to know David:

Who are your students at SVE?

Diego and Aly

What do you love the most about volunteering at Sunset Valley?

I love trying to give back a tiny bit to make things easier for the teachers who do so much for our kiddos.

What is your background (profession/ workplace/ training)?

I'm self-employed and lucky to mostly work from home.

What’s an interesting fact about you that people may not know?

I'm one of the few born and raised in Austin and plan on retiring here.

October 2020 - Karen Hansen

Who are your students at SVE?

Tommy in 4th grade

What do you love the most about volunteering at Sunset Valley?

I love making sure that faculty and staff know that they are appreciated, supported and can count on us to be collaborative partners to help our students be the most successful they can be.

What is your background (profession/ workplace/ training)?

I’m a proud New Jersey native with a background in Graphic Design and Illustration but am now the Elementary Art Teacher at Joslin Elementary.

What’s an interesting fact about you that people may not know?

The first answer is what Tommy wants me to say:

“I “flew”over 2,000 miles to get to Texas and boy are my arms tired! 🤣“

But, here’s another option:

I did not watch any Star Trek growing up but, I am now a fan!  This past March, my family started watching one episode a day of the original TV series. It’s amazing how ground breaking it was and how the issues they cover are still relevant today.

¿Quiénes son sus estudiantes en SVE?

Tommy, grado 4.

Volunteer of the Month / Voluntario del mes

September 2020 - Brad Dusing

Who are your students at SVE?

I am the librarian at Sunset Valley Elementary, and I serve all students from PreK-3 through 5th grade including Early Childhood Special Education and Life Skills students!

What do you love the most about volunteering at Sunset Valley?

I love our amazingly supportive educational community! I don't (or try not to 😉) fit the traditional teacher-librarian mold and have some ambitious ideas from time to time, but this has never stopped our students, families, faculty, and staff from working together to further literacy goals on campus! Volunteering is my opportunity to show my gratitude and return some of that support!

What is your background (profession/ workplace/ training)?

This is my fourth year as the librarian at SVE, and I was a classroom teacher for 10 years before landing my dream job- thanks to former, proud principal Emily Bush for giving me the opportunity!

What’s an interesting fact about you that people may not know?

I feel like I am an open book (pun absolutely intended!), but people may not know that I taught English as a foreign language in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico for two years after college graduation. It is my dream to live in Mexico again one day and start my own marketing/events consulting business to bring authors into bookstores and schools for events.

¡Me encanta nuestra comunidad educativa increíblemente solidaria!
