Competitions

This year we are excited to introduce two new events to our Fall Fiesta! Each event is designed to engage students and families in an adaptation of traditional Dia de los Muertos activities. Read more about the Sugar Skull Decorating and Catrina Costume competitions below.

Book reading and signing

Monarch butterflies hold a special significance in Dia de Los Muertos. They arrive in Mexico around the time of the holiday at the end of their annual migration. Tania DeGregorio, a local author, will be reading her story about a Monarch named Aria and autographing books. Order it in English and Spanish.

Volunteer

Fall Fiesta is made possible by our wonderful parent volunteers. Please sign up to volunteer for 30 minutes. Every volunteer gets a chance to win a $50 Southwest gift card—winner announced at the end of the evening.

Sugar Skull Decorating Competition

Sugar skulls have a long history on Dia de los Muertos offrendas and are a widely recognized symbol of the holiday. Decorating competitions are held throughout Latin American countries- some decorate giant sugar skulls made from molds that are decades old! We are bringing this tradition to our community this year with our first annual "Sugar" skull decorating competition. Our white skulls aren't made of sugar but the idea is the same. Each kit contains your white skull, a variety of paint colors and paint brushes- you can add materials of your own if you would like but it's not necessary.

*Note: sales are closed.* Kits cost $10 and are limited to the first 40 purchasers. Submissions will be divided into two different categories: K-2nd and 3rd-5th with a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each category.  Lucky 1st place winners go home with a $15 Krispy Kreme gift card, 2nd place with a $10 Sonic gift card, and 3rd place with a $5 Chick-fil-a gift card. Every participant will receive a coupon for a free cotton candy at the event!

Catrina Costume Competition

La Catrina is a symbol of Dia de los Muertos that originated out of Mexico in the early 1900's and represents that death is an integral part of life and should be acknowledged and celebrated. The popularity has flourished in the last 100+ years and is now widely recognized in relation to the holiday. This year we will be hosting a Catrin y Catrina fashion competition with both individual and group categories. Awards and prizes are as follows:

  • Best Friend Group - $25 Cinemark gift card
  • Best Family Group - $25 Chuck E Cheese gift card
  • Best of Show Individual - $25 Chuck E Cheese gift card
  • Spookiest Individual - $15 Whataburger gift card
  • Most Traditional - $15 Whataburger gift card
  • Cutest Little - $15 Whataburger gift card

Please note that while this is a costume contest and occurs near Halloween, gore and blood do not play a role in this Dia de los Muertos tradition.
